Abortion. Election Issue or Not?

Roe V Wade and Casey V Planned Parenthood were the 2 cases that legalized abortion in the United States. I don’t recall there ever being any real discussion in the public square. I do know the Catholic Church was opposed to it.

There was a cultural shift that laid the groundwork for the Supreme Court decision -why Roe V Wade came up at all.We have to know how we got here before we take up the recent court decision in 2022.

Where did the Catholic Church stand on the question of abortion? She started with the question regarding the use of artificial contraception. In the encyclical Humanae Vitae Pius the VI noted the following re artificial birth control:

17. Responsible men can become more deeply convinced of the truth of the doctrine laid down by the Church on this issue if they reflect on the consequences of methods and plans for artificial birth control. Let them first consider how easily this course of action could open wide the way for marital infidelity and a general lowering of moral standards. Not much experience is needed to be fully aware of human weakness and to understand that human beings—and especially the young, who are so exposed to temptation—need incentives to keep the moral law, and it is an evil thing to make it easy for them to break that law. Another effect that gives cause for alarm is that a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, and, disregarding her physical and emotional equilibrium, reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires, no longer considering her as his partner whom he should surround with care and affection.

Finally, careful consideration should be given to the danger of this power passing into the hands of those public authorities who care little for the precepts of the moral law. Who will blame a government which in its attempt to resolve the problems affecting an entire country resorts to the same measures as are regarded as lawful by married people in the solution of a particular family difficulty? Who will prevent public authorities from favoring those contraceptive methods which they consider more effective? Should they regard this as necessary, they may even impose their use on everyone. It could well happen, therefore, that when people, either individually or in family or social life, experience the inherent difficulties of the divine law and are determined to avoid them, they may give into the hands of public authorities the power to intervene in the most personal and intimate responsibility of husband and wife.

Anyone remember their parish priest bringing this encyclical up in a sermon? I remember our generation being sold the idea of free love and how the birth control pill and eventually abortion were civil rights.i’ve had the feeling for some time that artificial birth control opened the door to both abortion and same sex marriage.Humane Vitae asserted that artificial birth control would lead to legalized abortion. When our cultural norms shifted the pro abortion groups, especially Planned Parenthood, were very effective in influencing the court and public debate ended. Let’s put it this way. When a man is promiscuous he can contract an STD. When a woman is promiscuous she can become pregnant. Public opinion was swayed against the pro life movement due to a few isolated incidents that involved lone wolves resorting to violence-the media did their usual act of driving the narrative. The pro life movement had a lot of momentum. It just didn’t gain the numbers it needed early on to be effective. The numbers supporting life have been increasing over the years even with all the opposition and forces arrayed against it.

Oddly enough the liberal justice on the Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, wasn’t crazy about the Roe v Wade decision. She thought incremental change would have been better She did support legalized abortion-don’t get this wrong-but didn’t like how sweeping Roe v Wade was with no restrictions at all.

People got the impression Roe v Wade restricted abortion. In reality it had no time frame at all. A woman could have an abortion during any trimester she chose. The pro life movement spent years hoping Roe v Wade would be overturned. Most of them thought once it was abortion would automatically become illegal nationwide. Many of us knew that wasn’t the case and it would simply be turned over to the states to decide. I didn’t think i would see Roe v Wade overturned in my life time, did you?

The decision came down on June 24,2022 with the opinion written by Justice Alito. Roe v Wade was overturned and just as many of us thought it would go, the question of legality was turned back to the states. The liberal pro abortion crowd lost their minds misunderstanding the ruling from the time it was leaked. All they heard was Roe v Wade had been overturned and in their minds that meant-God forbid-no more abortions. All it really meant was the states would decide whether abortion should be legal or restricted and by how much or not restricted at all.So you could have a total ban in one state and abortion on demand in another.Planned Parenthood is still tax payer funded. I don’t understand why that is the case. [NPR is another liberal entity that is tax payer funded].

Pius VI noted in Humane Vitae, “it is never lawful, even for the gravest reasons, to do evil that good may come of it (18)—in other words, to intend directly something which of its very nature contradicts the moral order, and which must therefore be judged unworthy of man, even though the intention is to protect or promote the welfare of an individual, of a family or of society in general”.

Yes, i believe abortion is evil but you would only believe that if you thought taking an innocent human life is evil. How do i reconcile that with the issue of abortion being turned back to the states? I’ve always believed that the pro life movement would do better to focus on changing hearts and minds. As a Catholic i believe the Church has a huge responsibility to speak directly to the laity about artificial birth control and abortion. They can’t mince words. There should be no confusion on what the Church teaches. So what’s happened since Roe v Wade was overturned? The left(Democrats)wants to continue to make abortion an election issue. The mid terms are just months away. Abortion was taken off the table. The Republicans had a chance to focus on Biden’s weaknesses and he has plenty. The Democrats were just waiting to make abortion a front and center issue-a distraction.

Lindsey Graham decided to write up a bill that would ban abortion. The Democrats didn’t miss the opportunity to go after Republicans. Would such a bill pass the Senate? Not a chance. The votes aren’t there. So you have to wonder what Graham was thinking. Graham handed the Democrats a gift wrapped package. It never had the votes. It was DOA. Remember, the court had just overturned Roe v Wade and gave the authority to decide abortion in the states. What the Graham bill proposed was taking back the power from the states and giving it to the Fed government again. This definitely wouldn’t fly. Besides, why would you show the Democrats your hand? It didn’t make sense. The timing was horrid and the proposal futile. You tell the Democrats what you would like to do right before the mid terms knowing it would be a dismal failure? i’m 100% pro life. This seemed counter intuitive. Some people thought Graham might intentionally be throwing the election to the Dems. IMHO Graham simply hadn’t given it much thought.

Let’s go back to focusing on changing hearts and minds. I think most people are supportive of some restrictions and reject abortion on demand. You would think for a group of people, like the left, who pride themselves on tolerance and compassion they would have compassion for the most vulnerable and defenseless, the unborn.Senator Graham meant well. He had the best of intentions. Good intentions met reality.

Let’s get to the heart of the matter:

Here is an excerpt from Mother Therese’s speech at the National Prayer Breakfast 1994

“…if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even His life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts.

By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her problems.

And, by abortion, the father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. That father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion just leads to more abortion.

Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want.

This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion”.

We want legislation that protects human life . The best way to achieve the goal is to change hearts and minds first. The next step is to get the right people elected. We don’t get the right people elected none of this is going to matter {(hello, Senator Graham). The Dems were trying to run on abortion because they had nothing else to run on.

[They are radical when it comes to abortion just like they are radical when it comes to other issues].

I grew up when abortion was illegal. I don’t recall it being a huge problem. We saw starting a family and having a baby as cause for celebration. i also remember there being what were called ‘shotgun’ weddings. The truth was, if a man got a woman pregnant he married her and accepted the responsibility that came with having a child. He would have been shamed if he had abandoned the woman. Pregnancy outside of marriage was rare. A baby born out of wedlock was rare. It’s the way it was. Here we are now with over 63 million abortions, that is,a whole generation gone. I wouldn’t call this progressive .I don’t get how abortion liberated women, made children wanted and strengthened the nuclear family. I do get how Humane Vitea was prophetic and the words from Mother (Saint)Therese could be taken as a warning.

I don’t think we are ever going to abolish abortion legislatively until we are able to persuade public opinion. I also don’t see it as the major issue the Democrats are hoping it will be in November. I’m not saying it’s not important- i will always vote for pro life candidates-but people are very concerned about the issues that affect them personally. I hope that makes sense. We have to get a narrative to rival the Democrat’s, then we have to be strategic.

Sen Graham meant well, he just jumped the gun so to speak. We’re on the same page, just a different way of addressing it. We ended slavery. It was no small task was it? It led to the only civil war our country has ever seen. The battle over abortion is no small task either. It will not culminate with the bloody civil war of our past, but it has certainly been brutal and divisive. On the other hand we never thought we’d live to see Roe V Wade overturned and it actually happened.

Priest Commonly Abuse Children Myth – About

MYTH: A priest is more likely to sexually abuse children than other adults.

REALITY: This is false. This is a myth that has been heavily pushed by the mainstream media and Hollywood. Many people have been manipulated into believing this falsehood. According to a Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll, 64 percent of those asked believe Catholic priests frequently abuse children.

There is no evidence that priest abuse children at a higher rate than other adult. The available data shows that priests are less likely to abuse children than school teachers.

According to a study by The Nature and Scope of Sexual Abuse of Minors and a study by John Jay College of Criminal Justice, about 4 percent of priests have been accused of sexually abusing children.

As for teachers, according to a U.S. Department of Education study, about 6 percent of public schoolteachers had credible claims of child sexual abuse.

In addition, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) reports that somewhere between 3 to 5 percent of men meet the criteria for pedophilia.

In conclusion, there is no evidence that priests sexually abuse children more than any other group.
