Here We Go(again). Was Jesus Jewish?

Before we go into that question we are going to have to be sure we are on the same page re the nature of Jesus Himself.

Jesus is true God and true man. He has 2 natures, one person. We have only 1 nature, human. We are one person.

Jesus has 2 natures. One nature human, the other divine. He is one person.

Jesus entered time, space and history when He was conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary-a woman with 1 nature. Human.

Jesus is prefigured in the OT. He is revealed in the New meaning all of scripture is about Jesus. In fact, the Word of God is not a thing. The Word of God IS Jesus.

The Chosen people were waiting for a Messiah. They had their own ideas of what the Messiah would be. In fact, Jesus asks his disciples who they believe He is. Some say this, some say that but He’s asking them, who do they think He is? Some expected the Messiah to come and save them from Roman oppression politically or militarily.

They were awaiting a Messiah to save them.

Luke 2:22-40

22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[a]), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[b]

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss[c] your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31     which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Note the opening of the paragraph.

When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[a]), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[b]

Jewish.

When Jesus vanished for 3 days and Mary and Joseph went to look for Him where did they find Him?

Luke 2:46

Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.

In the temple. Jewish.

Luke 4:16

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

It was a custom Jesus was brought up in and here He would read from the Torah on the Sabbath. Jewish.

How about the Passover observance? Jewish.

The 12 apostles? Jewish. They would refer to Jesus as a ‘rabbi.’ Jewish.

Mark 15:42

Since it was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), 43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.…

Jewish.

John 19:40-42

“So they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb wherein was never man yet laid. There then because of the Jews’ Preparation (for the tomb was nigh at hand) they laid Jesus.”

Jewish.

The mother of Jesus is Jewish. He is presented in the Temple for purification. He is raised to attend synagogue and read from the Torah. He observed Passover with His disciples and He was buried according to Jewish custom. From earthly beginning to end Jesus was Jewish.

Now unless you’re antisemitic there’s no avoiding the proof .Jesus was Jewish.
