To Mask or Not To Mask,to Vax or Not to Vax. That is THE Question

A Final Entry on Covid-19. It’s not my topic of choice. i’m NOT an MD so there’s no medical advice to give you either . This is just basic information.

My husband and i were at the Cleveland Clinic for his pre-op tests and labs when word of this Nouveau Coronavirus was first getting out. Nouveau as in new(very important). We were not following any guidelines. There weren’t any.i saw 1 man, out of hundreds, wearing a mask. It could have been for other reasons too for all we knew, but i thought at the time he was taking the virus pretty seriously. More than the rest of us who had no idea at the time. We got to Cleveland by Amtrak, rode on the shuttle going back and forth to the hotel and ate at the hotel restaurant with other customers. No social distancing. No masks.Nothing. There was a virus but we didn’t need to worry. When the 2 of us got home it was a whole different story and we decided to self isolate for a few weeks.

Now let’s begin with a timeline. A look back at how it all started out:

31 Dec 2019

WHO’s Country Office in the People’s Republic of China picked up a media statement by the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission from their website on cases of ‘viral pneumonia’ in Wuhan, People’s Republic of China.

The Country Office notified the International Health Regulations (IHR) focal point in the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office about the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission media statement of the cases and provided a translation of it.

WHO’s Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) platform also picked up a media report on ProMED (a programme of the International Society for Infectious Diseases) about the same cluster of cases of “pneumonia of unknown cause”, in Wuhan.

Several health authorities from around the world contacted WHO seeking additional information.

So,as you read the timeline, remember from Dec 2019 up to Jan 2020 the culprit was thought to be an outbreak of pneumonia. The symptoms are similar. They had no clue what was causing it.

1 January 2020

WHO requested information on the reported cluster of atypical pneumonia cases in Wuhan from the Chinese authorities.

WHO activated its Incident Management Support Team (IMST), as part of its emergency response framework, which ensures coordination of activities and response across the three levels of WHO (Headquarters, Regional, Country) for public health emergencies.

2 January 2020

The WHO Representative in China wrote to the National Health Commission, offering WHO support and repeating the request for further information on the cluster of cases.

WHO informed Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) partners about the cluster of pneumonia cases in the People’s Republic of China. GOARN partners include major public health agencies, laboratories, sister UN agencies, international organizations and NGOs.

3 January 2020

Chinese officials provided information to WHO on the cluster of cases of ‘viral pneumonia of unknown cause’ identified in Wuhan.

4  January 2020

WHO tweeted that there was a cluster of pneumonia cases – with no deaths – in Wuhan, Hubei province, People’s Republic of China, and that investigations to identify the cause were underway.

5 January 2020

WHO shared detailed information about a cluster of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause through the IHR (2005) Event Information System, which is accessible to all Member States. The event notice provided information on the cases and advised Member States to take precautions to reduce the risk of acute respiratory infections.

WHO issued its first Disease Outbreak News report. This is a public, web-based platform for the publication of technical information addressed to the scientific and public health communities, as well as global media. The report contained information about the number of cases and their clinical status; details about the Wuhan national authority’s response measures; and WHO’s risk assessment and advice on public health measures. It advised that “WHO’s recommendations on public health measures and surveillance of influenza and severe acute respiratory infections still apply”.

Finally on 9 January 2020

WHO reported that Chinese authorities determined that the outbreak was caused by a novel coronavirus.

Read What is a Coronavirus. We have to understand what they are talking about.

As of 19 January 2020

The WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WHO/WPRO) tweeted that, according to the latest information received and WHO analysis, there was evidence of limited human-to-human transmission.

And on 11 February 2020

WHO announced that the disease caused by the novel coronavirus would be named COVID-19

Now that we’ve gotten this far-the virus has a name and classification-it isn’t until March 11,2020 alarm starts to set in. The WHO has red flags go up. They notice the levels of spread and severity. They asses this new Covid-19 is a pandemic.

On JANUARY 30, 2020 CBS News reported that then Pres Trump had created a Corona Virus Task Force. At this point it was reported that there were 5 confirmed cases in the United States and debate by global ‘experts’ was still going on whether to declare an emergency or not.

Let’s take a few minutes to see what it is about Covid-19 that makes it deadly. There isn’t a debate about this one.We know it can be deadly.

The bottom line is you don’t want to catch it because it can be deadly and you don’t want to give it to others for the same reason. We know another fact with certainty; the virus is very contagious. Obviously. The next questions then are;how is it spread, how to stop the spread, how to keep from getting the virus, and how to treat it if you don’t.

China should have done more to stop the spread. The WHO should have set off the alarms sooner.

This comment on you tube made sense to me:

Another comment made an excellent point,

I’m still wondering why the world didn’t shutdown the airlines. Reducing flys to minimum.Closing borders is stupid if you let the airlines operate as normal.

Here is the report they commented on. i don’t normally use a report from Al Jazeera but since these journalists went into China with a ground report i couldn’t pass it up.They titled it 3 Days that Stopped the World.

We are going to have to admit the obvious. We were blindsided by the Nouveau Virus. The Chinese authorities were not forthcoming. The global community perhaps acted too slowly with too little information.

The blame falls squarely on the CCP for the pandemic.Unfortunately, the United States always seems to be more reactive than proactive. Maybe the virus had already reached the United States before we were aware of it.I said maybe. I would not build a conspiracy theory around a maybe. We have to stick to facts and be prepared to say we don’t know, when we don’t know.

Both COVID-19 and SARS are caused by coronaviruses. The virus that causes SARS is known as SARS-CoV, while the virus that causes COVID-19 is known as SARS-CoV-2. There are also other types of human coronaviruses.Let’s see what the similarities and differences are.

I’ve covered basic information about Covid-19. The only questions not answered are how is it spread, how to stop the spread, how to keep from getting the virus, and how to treat it if you don’t. What about herd immunity?

Here is an article from the Mayo Clinic that addresses the question re Covid.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/herd-immunity-and-coronavirus/art-20486808

I still haven’t provided a lick of information to answer the MAIN questions. The ones we all have.Again, they are: how is it spread, how to stop the spread, how to keep from getting the virus, and how to treat it if you don’t.

That’s where you have to get into the weeds and i don’t have any data to go by. I’m not even sure what data i would trust. When it comes to these questions you may have to do your own research. God knows,i’ve tried. It’s not easy sorting it out. All i can say is that when it comes to the mask or the vaccinations you will have to make up your own minds. I’ve worn the mask and don’t feel the loss of freedom some ppl do. Do i like it? Nope. Decide for yourselves. I’m still on the fence about the vaccine. i don’t have enough info that i’m comfortable with to make such a big decision.

Freedom to me means the ability to do the moral good or ought. When the government gets in the way of that i have a huge problem.

i do know this;i’m tired of the arguing.I don’t care if you wear or don’t wear a mask. When i go to a Dr. appointment it’s a requirement and no harm done. i wear one. When i leave the office i take it off. It seems a mask might stop the spread of other infectious diseases anyway and if they were anywhere, it’s probably in the Dr. office, where ppl go to get treated for being ill. I’ve always washed my hands. It’s good hygiene. I’m no crazier about wearing a mask than anyone. I hate to even see the public wearing them. i think it affects ppl psychologically because it reminds them of how vulnerable we are. It’s just not normal and that bugs us. I wish we could go back to the day before the outbreak but wishful is not an answer. Know this; I’m not a mask nazi. All i ask is you not go after ppl if they don’t wear one and not shame ppl if they do. The jury is still out on a lot of decisions, but i refuse to get into a mask/no mask or vaccine/no vaccine argument. The Catholic Church released it’s guidance on the vaccines. If you’re Catholic you should read it.

I don’t get into conspiracy theories here. From time to time i will posit an opinion but that’s all it is. I’m always willing to be proven wrong. i like facts. They serve us better in making informed decisions about anything.Speaking of opinion i’ve had the feeling for some time we don’t have a handle on ths new virus yet. I believe Pres Trump did the best he could do;what was humanly possible while he was fending off personal attacks all the time. The Democrats always had him embroiled in a major scandal ie the Russia Hoax and it had to be distracting to a certain extent. Still he did a darned good job considering what we were confronting- an invisible enemy as he called it.You can’t take it out with an air strike. I hope we have more data in the near future that can be thoroughly analyzed. We know more now than we did back when. No doubt. I believe we have a long ways to go yet. One word of advice only; talk to YOUR pcp. Your own doctor knows you, knows your medical history and if it’s a good doctor you have a personal working relationship. He has to stay informed too. It’s his professional duty. Some probably make a point of it & some probably don’t. i can’t speak for the medical community. You be the judge.

It’s a shame this happened. The CCP in China needs to be held accountable. The human toll and the economic damage it caused is enormous. IMHO nobody in any lab anywhere should be fooling around with this stuff. It’s only purpose is bioterrorism.
