Bill that would slap $100 tax on gun sales heads to Congress

A new bill to reduce gun violence aims to hit would-be weapons buyers where it hurts — in the wallet.

U.S. Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez is introducing a bill that would slap every gun sale with a $100 tax, and then use the extra money on anti-violence and mental health programs.

She announced the new legislation — which will be introduced to Congress later this week — at City Hall on Monday alongside key supporters, including U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.

Jeffries will co-sponsor the bill, which also includes provisions that would require all gun owners to report any stolen weapons within 48 hours.

Currently, there is no such requirement — a loophole that allows shady straw buyers to pretend that guns they purchased where simply stolen when they turn up in crimes.

Those who don’t report weapons stolen from their homes will be hit with a $10,000 penalty.
