Free Will,Freedom and License

Keep in mind as you read this-or for that matter any other entries-that 1. I’m Catholic 2. I’m not a theologian. This means I keep it simple 3. Being Catholic means I  accept the infalliblity of the Pope and Magesterium when speaking in matters re faith and morals.

Am convinced free will exists. You can see it in the Garden of Eden-further you can see it in the  news every single day.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains the doctrine of free will:

1730 God created man a rational being, conferring on him the dignity of a person who can initiate and control his own actions. “God willed that man should be ‘left in the hand of his own counsel,’ so that he might of his own accord seek his Creator and freely attain his full and blessed perfection by cleaving to him.”26

Man is rational and therefore like God; he is created with free will and is master over his acts.27

1731 Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act, to do this or that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one’s own responsibility. By free will one shapes one’s own life. Human freedom is a force for growth and maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection when directed toward God, our beatitude.

God gave man 10 commandments(laws)after the fall. [Compare that to the Federal government]

Nineof the 10 state what we must not do. One states what we must. The first commands us to worship God alone but we may not worship other gods. The 4th is the only one that states what we must do.Honor thy father and thy mother.

Jesus sums up all 10. We must love God,our neighbor and ourselves.
I was listening to Sean Hannity speak to a Muslim woman who is an activist in Saudi Arabia. Yes,our cultures are different.

Vastly different. It’s why I’m writing this entry. The topic they were discussing was freedom. When i think of freedom I think of freedom in terms of objective truth.

Free will is God giving man the ability ,as the Catechism states,to act or not act and shape one’s own life.Actions have consequences. We can control our own actions and those actions have consequences.

For good or for ill. What God doesn’t do is force.

Freedom is not the right to do whatever we want. We are not free to commit morally evil acts. We can’t go out and murder our neighbor and call it freedom. We can’t steal because we’re short of cash for a bill and call it freedom.
Freedom is the right to do the moral good or ought.

The Freedoms that are protected in the United States are spelled out.Freedom of religion, speech, assembly and press.

They give us room to do the moral good or ought.

We are endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights.Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Our Creator gave us those rights, not the state. The state does not give those to us so it cannot take them away.

Liberty is another word for freedom;again meaning the right to do the moral good or ought.

Licentious means lacking legal or moral restraints. It means that we can do whatever we want including morally evil acts.  Our culture confuses freedom(liberty)with licentiousness.Licentiousness leads to corrupt government.  You want an ethical government you have to have a culture of ethics.

This doesn’t mean we have to set up a system like some nation states and use a morality police.

It does mean we are to police ourselves and make laws that protect all citizens from the consequences of other people’s evil actions.

Sean Hannity seemed to think being able to wear a bikini at the beach or for gays to be able to act out in public was a sign of freedom in the United States. I think the world of Sean but this wasn’t the best representation of what freedom means to Americans.

She laughed. No small wonder. I don’t think soldiers fought in WWII or Reagen opposed Communism during the Cold War so women could wear bikins to the beach or gays could act out their sexual behaviors in public.

Let’s go over it again.

God created man with free will;he can take control of his own actions. God didn’t create evil. He permits it;otherwise we would not have free will.Man can choose to commit heniously evil actions.

Freedom is the ability to do the moral good or ought. No one is free to commit morally evil acts. He can choose to(free will)but that’s not freedom.I would have told his guest how American cherish the freedoms that our patriots have  fought and died for.

Freedom of religion, speech, press and assembly.I would have explained the ideal our founding fathers enshrined in our documents; that all men are created equal with the right to life, liberty(the real meaning of freedom)and the pursuit of happiness.

Licnestiousness is awfully hard to defend.

Speaking of beaches:
