For Illinois firefighter David Flowers Jr., it’s not just a matter of pride and patriotism — it’s a matter of preserving history.
An open letter to Cardinal DolanWednesday, September 10, 2014 – By Michael Hichborn
Dear Cardinal Dolan,Much has been said about the recent decision of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee in New York to allow a homosexual organization to march under its own banner in next year’s parade. Even more has been said about your strange and casual ambivalence about the decision. In a joint press conference with the parade organizers, you said, “I think the decision they made is a wise one. I have no trouble with the decision at all.” Standing next to you, a representative of the parade organizing committee said, “This change of tone and expanded inclusiveness is a gesture of good will in our continuing effort to keep the parade above politics, all the while remaining loyal to Church teachings, our patron St. Patrick, and the values and principles that have guided the parade throughout its long history.” If allowing active homosexuals to march under their own banner in a parade celebrating a Catholic saint is “a wise one” and “loyal to the teachings of the Church,” then St. Catherine of Siena was either a liar or a lunatic. In this excerpt from St. Catherine’s work, The Dialogue, which she wrote during a state of ecstasy, Our Blessed Lord told St. Catherine about how abominable sodomy truly is.See that some of these fruits are the food of beasts who live impurely, using their body and their mind like a swine who wallows in mud, for in the same way they wallow in the mire of sensuality. Oh, ugly soul, where have you left your dignity? You were made sister to the angels, and now you are become a brute beast. To such misery come sinners, notwithstanding that they are sustained by Me, who am Supreme Purity, notwithstanding that the very devils, whose friends and servants they have become, cannot endure the sight of such filthy actions. Neither does any sin, abominable as it may be, take away the light of the intellect from man, so much as does this one. emphasis added
We are made for love,goodness,truth and beauty.We are body and soul.Soul is the Divine Spark that gives the body life.
If you don’t believe in God or that Jesus IS God you can still surmise that man is made for love,goodness,truth and beauty because you have an intellect capable of understanding those things.You have a human will that desires those things.If you’re not sure what love,goodness,truth and beauty is you will probably seek it out. You will want the answer.I’m speaking of MOST people.
You also know that the human intellect can become confused or distressed. Further that the human will can also be attracted to things we would consider bad.Of course, I’m stating the obvious here.A Catholic takes Jesus as their role model for what it means to be truly human and good;we use Jesus as the bar. If we compare ourselves to Al Capone or Josef Stalin of course we look like saints…but that’s not the standard. It wouldn’t take much to be a better person than those 2.
Before anyone gets too crazy and calls me judgmental (or just plain mental)there was a time in my life where i could say i was a hair better than Al Capone and Josef Stalin. When i went to Confession i could honestly say i did everything but murder someone physically.You can kill someone spiritually. I also had a friend who struggled with same sex attraction.We parted company eventually.Mostly because the one thing we had in common was that we were always looking for the next party.He did not have a good end and I believe he died of AIDS. It’s an assumption but i will lay out the possibility(circumstances) later on.
I also believe had i continued on in the ‘party’ lifestyle I’d also be dead.Probably a long time ago.Another person from the past died in a horrible car accident and i know it was caused in part from alcohol. If i was still in the party mode at the time i might have been with her that night. We don’t get too many second chances.
I digress so let’s get back to the topic of same sex attraction. I also pointed out that the human race began with male and female because of a biological process called REPRODUCTION. Another words,the union of male and female CAN bring life to another human being.Adam and Eve were married. It’s a covenant and that they had. What else could Jesus have meant when He said the following:
* When Jesus* finished these words,* he left Galilee and went to the district of Judea across the Jordan. 2Great crowds followed him, and he cured them there. 3a Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him,* saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?” 4* b He said in reply, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ 5c and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” 7* d They said to him, “Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss [her]?” 8He said to them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9e I say to you,* whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery.” 10[His] disciples said to him, “If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” 11He answered, “Not all can accept [this] word,* but only those to whom that is granted. 12Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some, because they have renounced marriage* for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it.”
Jesus reference to marriage is italicized.He is pointing back to Genesis;”from the beginning.”
We know that we have an inherent dignity because we are human beings. There isn’t a single living thing that has the intellect,free will,capacity to love and be loved like man does. No other living thing can choose good or evil. Our dignity comes from our being human and for that reason alone i wouldn’t identify someone as being ‘gay’. Their identity comes from being human.We also know that man is capable of not only marriage,but adultery. For Catholics,that’s a sin against the 6th commandment.The secular culture has to admit it’s not good for marriage but seems to be willing to accept it. Furthermore,adultery as understood by Catholicism isn’t limited to having an affair.Jesus said,you can commit adultery in your heart if you as much as look on another woman(wife included)with lust.Adultery is detrimental to marriage on so many levels and can even destroy a marriage-you don’t have to be Christian to understand that.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
2331 “God is love and in himself he lives a mystery of personal loving communion. Creating the human race in his own image . . .. God inscribed in the humanity of man and woman the vocation, and thus the capacity and responsibility, of love and communion.”115
“God created man in his own image . . . male and female he created them”;116 He blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply”;117 “When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.”118
2332 Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul. It especially concerns affectivity, the capacity to love and to procreate, and in a more general way the aptitude for forming bonds of communion with others.
2333 Everyone, man and woman, should acknowledge and accept his sexual identity. Physical, moral, and spiritual difference and complementarity are oriented toward the goods of marriage and the flourishing of family life. The harmony of the couple and of society depends in part on the way in which the complementarity, needs, and mutual support between the sexes are lived out.
2334 “In creating men ‘male and female,’ God gives man and woman an equal personal dignity.”119 “Man is a person, man and woman equally so, since both were created in the image and likeness of the personal God.”120
2335 Each of the two sexes is an image of the power and tenderness of God, with equal dignity though in a different way. The union of man and woman in marriage is a way of imitating in the flesh the Creator’s generosity and fecundity: “Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh.”121 All human generations proceed from this union.122
2336 Jesus came to restore creation to the purity of its origins. In the Sermon on the Mount, he interprets God’s plan strictly: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”123 What God has joined together, let not man put asunder.124
The tradition of the Church has understood the sixth commandment as encompassing the whole of human sexuality.
The secular culture confuses lust with love.
The Catechism makes it clear:
2351 Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes.
The Catechism then addresses the question of same sex attraction.Homosexual ACTS are contrary to the natural law.
They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.
The Catholic Church cannot approve of same sex ‘marriage’ because for one it is not marriage.The secular culture can call it legal. The Catholic Church cannot.
Again,I’ll turn to the Catechism for how we are to treat persons with a disordered attraction to people of the same gender.
This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.
You’ll say..that’s the Catholic Church.What about the secular culture?
We’re going to jump into that in Part III(the conclusion).We’ll begin with these facts.
1. The divorce rate in the United States is extremely high.Catholics are catching up with the general population if they haven’t already.
2. Same sex relationships have a very poor record on fidelity.It’s not as if heterosexuals have a great track record;but the record with same sex partners is abysmal.
3. Pope Paul the VI had it right when he wrote Humanae Vitae. Prophetic. http://www.newadvent.org/library/docs_pa06hv.htm
4. Adoption by same sex partners is a problem in itself. We have to take an honest look at consequences.What will become of us as a society in the not too distant future, given where we’re at now.
Finally, coming back to the faith is not just about giving up sin(.Some people are reluctant to give up anything if it seems like ‘fun’,even sin).It’s about CONVERSION. Jesus says,here is a life of freedom. It also doesn’t mean we come back to Catholicism,give up sin, choose a life of freedom and not struggle.If you do this some people will say that you ‘got religion.’ It doesn’t hurt to KNOW your religion.You should. So i’m ok with people saying that about me. It’s about getting a REAL life.
The Autumn ~ Elizabeth Barret Browning 1833
Go, sit upon the lofty hill,
And turn your eyes around,
Where waving woods and waters wild
Do hymn an autumn sound.
The summer sun is faint on them —
The summer flowers depart —
Sit still — as all transform’d to stone,
Except your musing heart.
How there you sat in summer-time,
May yet be in your mind;
And how you heard the green woods sing
Beneath the freshening wind.
Though the same wind now blows around,
You would its blast recall;
For every breath that stirs the trees,
Doth cause a leaf to fall.
Oh! like that wind, is all the mirth
That flesh and dust impart:
We cannot bear its visitings,
When change is on the heart.
Gay words and jests may make us smile,
When Sorrow is asleep;
But other things must make us smile,
When Sorrow bids us weep!
The dearest hands that clasp our hands, —
Their presence may be o’er;
The dearest voice that meets our ear,
That tone may come no more!
Youth fades; and then, the joys of youth,
Which once refresh’d our mind,
Shall come — as, on those sighing woods,
The chilling autumn wind.
Hear not the wind — view not the woods;
Look out o’er vale and hill —
In spring, the sky encircled them —
The sky is round them still.
Come autumn’s scathe — come winter’s cold —
Come change — and human fate!
Whatever prospect Heaven doth bound,
Can ne’er be desolate.
