Archbishop Chaput Homily,Worth Reading

Below is the text of Archbishop Charles Chaput’s homily for the National Prayer Vigil for Life Closing Mass on Jan. 22.  Weather prevented the Archbishop’s travel to Washington. The homily was delivered on his behalf by Msgr. Walter Rossi, rector of the National Shrine.
First reading: 1 Sm 17: 32-33, 37, 40-51
Responsorial Psalm: Ps 144: 1B, 2, 9-10
Gospel: Mk 3:1-6

Today is the 41st anniversary of Roe v Wade, which effectively legalized abortion on demand.  It’s a time to look back and look ahead.  The abortion struggle of the past four decades teaches a very useful lesson.  Evil talks a lot about “tolerance” when it’s weak.  When evil is strong, real tolerance gets pushed out the door.  And the reason is simple.  Evil cannot bear the counter-witness of truth.  It will not co-exist peacefully with goodness, because evil insists on being seen as right, and worshiped as being right.  Therefore, the good must be made to seem hateful and wrong.

The very existence of people who refuse to accept evil and who seek to act virtuously burns the conscience of those who don’t.  And so, quite logically, people who march and lobby and speak out to defend the unborn child will be – and are – reviled by leaders and media and abortion activists that turn the right to kill an unborn child into a shrine to personal choice.

Seventy years ago, abortion was a crime against humanity.  Four decades ago, abortion supporters talked about the “tragedy” of abortion and the need to make it safe and rare.  Not anymore.  Now abortion is not just a right, but a right that claims positive dignity, the license to demonize its opponents and the precedence to interfere with constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech, assembly and religion.  We no longer tolerate abortion.  We venerate it as a totem.

People sometimes ask me if we can be optimistic, as believers, about the future of our country.  My answer is always the same.  Optimism and pessimism are equally dangerous for Christians because both God and the devil are full of surprises.  But the virtue of hope is another matter.  The Church tells us we must live in hope, and hope is a very different creature from optimism.  The great French Catholic writer Georges Bernanos defined hope as “despair overcome.”  Hope is the conviction that the sovereignty, the beauty and the glory of God remain despite all of our weaknesses and all of our failures.  Hope is the grace to trust that God is who he claims to be, and that in serving him, we do something fertile and precious for the renewal of the world.

Our lives matter to the degree that we give them away to serve God and to help other people.  Our lives matter not because of who we are.  They matter because of who God is.  His mercy, his justice, his love – these are the things that move the galaxies and reach into the womb to touch the unborn child with the grandeur of being human.  And we become more human ourselves by seeing the humanity in the poor, the weak and the unborn child and then fighting for it.

Over the past 41 years, the prolife movement has been written off as dying too many times to count.  Yet here we are, again and again, disappointing our critics and refusing to die.  And why is that?  It’s because the Word of God and the works of God do not pass away.  No court decision, no law and no political lobby can ever change the truth about when human life begins and the sanctity that God attaches to each and every human life.

The truth about the dignity of the human person is burned into our hearts by the fire of God’s love.  And we can only deal with the heat of that love in two ways.  We can turn our hearts to stone.  Or we can make our hearts and our witness a source of light for the world.  Those of you here today have already made your choice.  It’s a wonderful irony that despite the cold and snow of January, there’s no such thing as winter in this great church.  This is God’s house.  In this place, there’s only the warmth of God’s presence and God’s people.  In this place, there’s no room for fear or confusion or despair, because God never abandons his people, and God’s love always wins.

We are each of us created and chosen by God for a purpose, just as David was chosen; which is why the words of the Psalmist speak to every one of us here today:

Oh God, I will sing a new song to you;
With a ten-stringed lyre I will chant your praise,
You who give victory to kings,
And deliver David, your servant from the sword.

The Psalmist wrote those words not in some magic time of peace and bliss, but in the midst of the Jewish people’s struggle to survive and stay faithful to God’s covenant surrounded by enemies and divided internally among themselves.  That’s the kind of moment we find ourselves in today.  All of us are here because we love our country and want it to embody in law and in practice the highest ideals of its founding.  But nations are born and thrive, and then decline and die.  And so will ours.  Even a good Caesar is still only Caesar.  Only Jesus Christ is Lord, and only God endures.  Our job is to work as hard as we can, as joyfully as we can, for as long as we can to encourage a reverence for human life in our country and to protect the sanctity of the human person, beginning with the unborn child.

We also have one other duty: to live in hope; to trust that God sees the weakness of the vain and powerful; and the strength of the pure and weak.  The reading from Samuel today reminds us that David cut down the warrior Goliath with a sling and a smooth, simple stone from the wadi.  And what I see here before me today are not “five smooth stones from the wadi” but hundreds and hundreds of them.  Our job is to slay the sin of abortion and to win back the women and men who are captive to the culture of violence it creates.  In the long run, right makes might, not the other way around.  In the long run, life is stronger than death, and your courage, your endurance, your compassion even for those who revile you, serves the God of life.

The Gospel today tells us that Jesus has power over illness and deformity.  But even more radically, it reminds us that Jesus is the Lord of the sabbath itself – the one day set aside every week to honor the Author of all creation.  The sabbath is for man, as Jesus says elsewhere in the Gospel, not man for the sabbath.  In like manner, the state and its courts and its laws were made for man, not man for the state.  The human person is the subject of life and the subject of history; immortal and infinitely precious in the eyes of God; not an accident of chemistry, not a bit player, and not a soulless object to be affirmed or disposed of at the whim of the powerful or selfish.

If Jesus is the lord of the sabbath, he is also the lord of history.  And sooner or later, despite the weaknesses of his friends and the strengths of his enemies, his will will be done — whether the Pharisees and Herodians of our day approve of it or not.

Gov Cuomo is just the epitome(FINAL,edited version)

Gov Cuomo is just the epitome of where the left has been since the election of Obama. Obama leads by example and his lawless corrupt admin attacks their opponent(aka the ‘enemy’)on a regular basis. They won’t tolerate ANYONE who disagrees with Obama. Cuomo is only saying what most of the left thinks.

Look at the media black out of the March for Life. Look at the rise of their heroine Wendy Davis.Who was she until she stood up for abortion on demand and what they call women’s “rights.” Bottom Line:Abortion is a lucrative business flowing with money. They have politicians in their back pocket. Money talks.Everyone thinks Kermit Gosnell was an anomaly. Surely he was the worst of the worst but does anyone REALLY know what goes on in these clinics? Not likely. We really don’t want to see. As long as it’s out of sight most of us find it easy to live with.

Truth:abortion is one of the most unregulated businesses in America although it’s very lucrative.

Truth:All legalized abortion did was move the abortionist into a ‘respectable’ office, increase the profits and PROTECT him.Can you sue an abortionist if there’s a problem? Ever hear of it? Nobody is going to sue them. Think about it. These scared young women are trying to keep it secret. The likelihood of an abortionist being sued for malpractice is slim to none and he knows it.

Look at how long Gosnell got away with the horrific things going on in his ‘clinic’. He would have continued to get away with it except for the circumstances that arose-the rest of them are not much better.

Anyone really know what goes on in these clinics?

The left won’t talk about these things and they are bound and determined to black out the pro life movement.Unfortunately the people in the abortion generation are entrenched in their pro abortion mentality.Fortunately the next generation-the younger generation growing up now-IS pro life. Once the dinosaurs are gone these young people will see abortion end in the United States.I won’t live to see the day but their numbers grow and i believe they will struggle and win!!
I read Archbishop Chaput’s Homily for Life.He set me straight on this one.Sometimes i’m guilty of falling into the trap:

Optimism and pessimism are equally dangerous for Christians because both God and the devil are full of surprises. But the virtue of hope is another matter. The Church tells us we must live in hope, and hope is a very different creature from optimism. The great French Catholic writer Georges Bernanos defined hope as “despair overcome.” Hope is the conviction that the sovereignty, the beauty and the glory of God remain despite all of our weaknesses and all of our failures. Hope is the grace to trust that God is who he claims to be, and that in serving him, we do something fertile and precious for the renewal of the world.

Wise to keep those words in mind.Sometimes we get tricked into optimism or pessimism even with the best of intentions.

They know what abortion has done to their generation. They get it.When our generation were teens it was all about ‘free love.’ The sexual revolution. It’s the generation Obama came from. Let’s call it for what it was.DESTRUCTIVE.It got into our social institutions. Higher education, media, entertainment, culture. It’s a PERMISSIVE culture using the word tolerant to cover itself. Now the same destructive people are being elected to higher office and the highest office of President. That’s who Obama is and he admits it in Dreams of My  Father. He says he did drugs, hung out with radicals and had no ambitions. You know very well he was closely associated with William Ayers. He said himself he sought out the radicals. You don’t seek out radicals and NOT associate with Ayers. It’s that simple.Obama is part and parcel of that radical Chicago group. Was then and is NOW.

As for me.I’m thankful I chose life. My son got married, had kids of his own and they are enjoying the youth they would never have had if my choice had been abort. One day they will have children too.Abortion doesn’t end just one life.It ends many. I feel bad for the young women abandon by these irresponsible men/boys. I feel equally bad for the young men/boys who actually wanted the baby to live and were told it was none of their business.

The left claims to be tolerant. I’ve been on social media long enough to know that’s as far from the truth as it gets. You should see how they treat black conservatives. The name calling is outrageous.Cuomo only said out loud what most of them think.

Look at what Obama has gotten away with because the liberal media doesn’t have a clue what real journalism is anymore. They’re supposed to keep government honest for the people. How does it feel to know they actually cover up for him?Obama is Nixon without a media to uncover him. Obama is Nixon;except the Republicans called out Nixon.Nobody on the left is going to hold Obama’s feet to the fire. Can you imagine that Obama had his administration spying on James Rosen and bringing charges against him? Guess what…Obama got away with it.They pushed the offensive video on you tube for WEEKS as the cause of the Benghazi attack. Obama got away with it. The IRS targeting conservatives.Obama said he was going to get to the bottom of it.Yeah right. When the media carries your water, covers up for you and moves along why bother? You’re darned right he’s Nixon on steroids but he’s got something Nixon never had. A media that in some corners worships the ground he walks on or at the least doesn’t hold his feet to the fire on anything. There’s no such thing as journalism anymore. We would never have a Woodward/Bernstein today. Obama can be as corrupt, lawless and lie as often as he likes. It doesn’t matter. Who’s going to blow the whistle?

This is the country you live in now. More people on food stamps.More people in poverty. The right of the day? Same sex marriage or what they call marriage ‘equality’. Anyone know what marriage ‘equality’ means? We know what marriage is.We’ve always known what marriage is. We know what the 2nd amendment means too. We see the news about shootings by troubled individuals who have NO respect for life and the first thing the left wants to do is take away the 2nd amendment right of law abiding citizens. You can’t point out the convoluted thinking of liberalism. They call YOU radical.

Look at what Obama has tried to do to the military. His little social agenda extends even to an experiment in our disciplined military. He announces a surge and a pull out at the same time in Afghanistan. He puts a red line in the sand and because of a lack of leadership on his part it means NOTHING. He tells everyone Al Qaeda is on the run while the Middle East is going up in flames. He’s too busy with his fundamental transformation of America to HIS VISION of what America should be to bother with foreign policy. If he can make it look like he’s involved it’s supposed to pass snuff. The Obama administration is all about appearances, staged imagery, PUBLIC RELATIONS.If it looks like he’s doing something he must be doing something. It’s called smoke and mirrors people.

What did people think the fundamental transformation of America meant? He was very plain when he said that. He didn’t mince words. We all heard it.What did people think he meant?

Dimes to dollars Obama agrees with Cuomo. He won’t say it that plainly. He won’t speak out loud with those exact words but he doesn’t think any differently. It’s why Obama attacks people who disagree with him. It’s why he tweets out in support of the LGBT community when the unemployment figures come out and people are losing jobs. You’d think the job loss would have been the first thing on his mind.Nope. His priorities. The LGBT community and Planned Parenthood. He could care less about the average American citizen.I read these tweets. If you’re not into social media you’re not going to see that.

He and Gov Cuomo are like minded. I can say that with absolute certainty.  You have to run into the Obama supporters and his surrogates. I’ve never met a nastier group of people who will get right into your face and call you racist, among other things. They call you intolerant but they would rather YOU sit down and shut up.It’s why Obama and the Dems use the War on Women rhetoric to demonize people who have the utmost respect for women. They paint their opposition as not caring for the poor.Obama has been President for 6 yrs. Look at the stats. He’s putting more people in poverty or on the brink. He’s putting industries out of business for his radical pipe dreams. It’s not about the American people at all. It’s about their agenda. It’s why he can get the unemployment figures for the day,not bat an eyelash and tweet about the rights of the LGBT community. Those figures mean nothing to him. He knows the media will carry the water for him anyway.

Gosnell gets caught. What does Obama do. Assures Planned Parenthood they have his full support. Did Obama address jobs in his earlier  state of the union addresses when he was elected? Nope. It was all about pushing Obamacare. He spent all of his FIRST term pushing Obamacare. You had to pass the law to see what was in it. He didn’t care what the American people thought. He lied right into the camera and told the American people they could keep their plan and keep their doctor,PERIOD.This isn’t about the American people. You disagree, move along. You bet he and Gov Cuomo are on the same page. He’s just not going to say it but you’d have to have blinders on not to see it.

Trust me; in his upcoming state of the union address he’s going to push class warfare and divide the country even further. He’ll use cloaked language and you won’t even know that’s exactly what he’s talking about. Listen carefully and watch what he does. It won’t be about jobs-never is-it will be about how to BRIBE the folks into accepting his agenda and those nasty Republicans are only going to take away those little gifts that he’s going to give you.The man can look right into the camera and LIE just to get elected. Then keep lying to get his policies through.I don’t trust a word he says. There’s nothing to stop him from looking into the camera and lying to the American people again.Watch the media after his address. They’ll be swooning. They call that analysis. They’ll actually criticize one or two points just so they can look objective.

NOTE: CALL ME RACIST. I wouldn’t care if Obama were purple, green or mauve. It’s his CHARACTER,not his skin color.Somebody have the guts to uncover this administration and stand up to him.SOMEBODY!! There has to be one person with the integrity to do it.

I can’t help myself.I have to say a few words in defense of Gov Huckabee

OK,more than a few words but i do have to stick up for him because he was right and his words were twisted to mean something they did not.

If you’re following the news or social media you probably know about Gov Huckabee’s little firestorm.BTW.It’s over something he did NOT say. The media has lost it. He used the word libido. It wasn’t the main point of the speech he gave either.
A heads up.I think highly of Gov Huckabee. I voted for him over McCain in our primary. I honestly think he had a better shot at beating Obama than McCain did but it was not to be. He’s on my highly possible list of Potus candidates in 2016. Along with Allen West and yes, even a 2nd try by Mitt Romney. The race is years away so I’m not going to worry about it much right now.I digress..let’s get back on track.

Remember when Romney was running and the Dems had their moment in the sun with Sandra Fluke? In fact, the Democrats and Obama supporters were putting it out there that Romney would take away women’s birth control(contraception). Sandra Fluke testified before Congress that a woman attending law school could not pay for law school and contraception both, leaving women at a a disadvantage.I believe that was her take. The Dems and Obama used a drummed up Republican ‘War on Women’ to get women to vote for Obama.

The economy was going down the tubes. I’m not sure why this was even an issue except that Obama had to come up with something to fight Romney on.

Birth control? Really? The Catholic Church deems artificial contraception intrinsically evil and we’re not supposed to use it. I won’t get into the whole teaching.Don’t need to for this discussion.

If you’re not Catholic it hardly applies to you. Nobody is going to take away anyone’s birth control. There are Catholics who shamefully ignore Church teaching but nobody is going to take it away from them either.A good priest/bishop will counsel and provide Church teaching(they are shepherds) but they’re not going to knock down your door and raid your medicine cabinet either.

I’m still not sure how it got to be a big issue. I’m a woman,to be sure a Catholic woman and there are lot of issues that concern me I will vote on.

All Gov Huckabee was saying is that the Democrats(NOT HIM)view women as being shallow and incapable of considering very important issues. The Democrats, not Huckabee, paint women as caring about nothing but whether they are going to get birth control or not. So you could take that to mean the DEMOCRATS are saying all women care about is their libido.

Odd because that’s exactly how they framed the election when Romney was running against Obama.

They -the Democrats-actually brought it up and then they got all up in arms because Gov Huckabee pointed it out. You know why? It’s not because it’s not how they think of women.  Gov Huckabee had the guts to say it. It’s because they weren’t framing the argument in terms of a War on Women. The point is ok as long as they get to use it to attack conservatives.

God forbid someone call them out on it for what it REALLY is.

Gov Huckabee is a wonderful man. He’s honest and upfront. He was considered a terrific governor in a Democratic state. He has the utmost respect for women especially his wife and their daughters. I’ve never heard a mean word come out of his mouth. He’s not afraid to speak up on the issues of the day. He’s articulate but tough and he tries to be reasonable with people who have opposing views.Maybe they’re afraid he will run for President again?

As for myself and the birth control issue it’s pretty simple.
As Catholics we follow Church teaching. The Church is not a democracy. We don’t take polls and we don’t vote on morality.

If you want to use contraception nobody can stop you.I can explain to you why the Church teaches what she does and hope you’d give it thoughtful consideration. If you’re a faithful Catholic you accept Church teaching even when it’s difficult and sometimes when you don’t quite understand. There are plenty of resources out there to help you understand. If you still can’t then you accept. It’s because you believe that the Pope when teaching ex cathedra re matters of faith and morals he is infallible. It’s what makes you Catholic. We are not the children of our age.

2. I think sex education does not belong in the schools nor should it be taught through a government program. It should definitely not be left to Planned Parenthood. It should be left to the PARENTS period.Kids don’t need the ‘how to’ engage in sexual behaviors as much as they need the how to of having good relationships, especially in preparation for what it takes to be married. We all get that from our parents. Kids can also enjoy the friendships they form.Sex does not have to enter the picture. We become adults when we learn to postpone gratification. Two year olds throw temper tantrums when they don’t get their own way.

3. If you’re a young woman/young man have some self respect and respect others.Wait until marriage. I know the culture looks upon you like a pack of dogs with no self control but i think you know better.

Don’t put yourself in precarious situations. There’s no reason to rush. You have your whole life ahead of you and that guy/gal you think might be it at the moment-may not be at all. The best way to know is to wait and that will give both of you the time to find out.It will also afford you the time and opportunity to make other very important decisions in your life.

I know Gov Huckabee was giving women far more credit than the Democrats have.Could he have left out the word libido and not got everyone spitting nails? Maybe. Should he have? I thought the left was big on not censoring speech? I’m also sure i’ve heard a lot worse coming from other commentators who never got the flack Gov Huckabee has  over one word. Thank God he didn’t apologize. He insulted no one.No apology necessary. Did he offer clarification since the media twisted everything he said? Yes he did. Case closed.

Maybe the media should start covering some real stories. Like Benghazi, the IRS, the NSA, Fast and Furious, the Health Care failures and the crisis in the economy. How’s that for starters?

4. Maybe you want to use birth control and you have no problem with abortion. No Romney was not going to stop you. Nor is Gov Huckabee.Nor is the Republican party. On the other hand there is no reason to have tax payer funded abortion or contraception, especially from people who in good conscience cannot support it. The American tax payer foots the bill for plenty and in the economy we have they’re already having a tough go.They’re worried about house payments, bills, food on the table, gas and having a job.If you can afford to go to law school, you can afford your own contraception. It’s not that expensive and is available. It’d be smarter to not  be in a situation where you have to use contraception especially if you are going to college/university and it’s important enough to you.I believe people ARE  going to school to get an education(that’s why we go to school, right?) and a job(hopefully) when they graduate.Gov Huckabee believes women ARE smart enough to figure this out. It’s the Democrats who are selling them short.Mike_Huckabee,_speaking_to_a_gathering_at_the_Commonwealth_Club_in_San_Francisco

Michael Dale “Mike” Huckabee is an American politician who served as the 44th Governor of Arkansas.
